We continue our journey, keeping up a good pace! After all, we have a deadline to meet; we need to be ready for the big crossing around the New Year.
Traveling can be very pleasant—cruising a bit, sitting in the sun, cooking a bit, working, and spending time with the kids. These are the good trips that we all enjoy a lot. The less enjoyable trips, for me, are the rough weather trips. The boat goes in all directions, the waves are frighteningly high, the wind blows so hard into the sails that I wonder why we don’t get blown over, visibility is often minimal, and not to mention, we are alone at sea. If something happens, we rely on rescue services.
The trips
So far, we have often had trips where one of us was seasick and it didn’t feel very comfortable. But now the weather is starting to improve a bit and the trips are becoming more enjoyable. This crossing was both very intense, with rough weather and being completely alone at sea, but also very pleasant, nice cruising. Sleep is always an issue when we cruise; Kay and I both like to sleep a lot, and that takes a hit. It is very exhausting.
Catching tuna
On this trip, Kay pushed through the entire night. I appreciate this immensely because he protects me from dangerous situations. I feel anything but safe, alone on the bridge in a storm. When it was finally time for him to rest, a new challenge arose. The fishing rod started to scream, and it turned out: a beautiful bluefin tuna was on the hook. I stopped the boat, and Kay reeled it in. It’s part of our new life, and I have a lot of respect and admiration for how he does it. He knows exactly what to do. If our lives depended on it, I would do it too. Kill and fillet a fish. But for now, I prefer to leave it to the captain.
Fortunately, the captain quickly ends its pain, no reason to let the poor creature suffer. We still lack a good filleting knife, so Kay has to partially use the axe. After a good hour, the fish is chopped into pieces and goes entirely into the freezer. This is important to kill any bacteria and worms.
Home schooling
We now have a nice routine in home schooling. We try to make every situation a teaching opportunity. The school of life suits us very well, and for the children, these are lessons they will never forget. But we would like to have some temporary help on board. It would provide some variety for the kids and some space for me. So, if you know someone with experience in education, let us know and sail with us!
