Every day is an adventure at sea! Our stay in Taormina brought back beautiful memories of our romantic getaway five years ago when Kay took me to see Andrea Bocelli in the Ancient Greek theatre. He booked a suite in the mountains, and for our anniversary, he arranged my favorite flowers: peonies. In August! As far as I know, you can only buy them in the spring, but he arranged it. So very romantic, five years ago ;-).
Etna
A few weeks pregnant, we visited Mount Etna. It was still a secret; nobody knew. In summer, it wasn’t that cold up there. The last visit, which you can see in this vlog, it was really cold up there! Beau was not amused. But we weren’t dressed for the occasion. The tour was not a success; it was very expensive, and we did not get our money’s worth. The trip to the volcano was very short, but long enough because of the cold. The waiting during the day was longer than the trip.
Syracuse
In Syracuse, we anchored in a beautiful bay. Every day a new cruise ship visited the bay. We always enjoy seeing the big ships and wonder what it would be like living aboard a big boat. But then, the other way around, they must be wondering what life on a catamaran is like!
Kindred Courage and the DutchSailingFamily
We met wonderful people in the bay: the American family living aboard Kindred Courage and the Dutch family living aboard the Roxy. We had lunch and a nice evening when my captain couldn’t restrain himself and started fixing cables on the Roxy. We came back around 9, and every night, we pull up the tender. Every night. It is quite a hassle, but we do it because it might be stolen. It’s very expensive, so we always make sure it’s nice and tight. This night, Kay said: I don’t feel like lifting it up. Let’s leave it. But after I put the kids to bed, I thought: no, we cannot leave it like this, hanging on a string behind the boat. So I lifted it out of the water.
Tender thief
Around midnight, we heard yelling and screaming. It was our Dutch neighbor yelling at a tender thief! They were already on their boat, trying to steal the motor.
Kay was immediately in Rambo mode, ran outside, ready for combat. He yelled at me: let the tender down! But the thieves were already gone.
If our tender was out, they probably would have stolen ours without us even noticing.
The next day, the guys went to the police with the camera footage, but they couldn’t do anything. Or they did not want to. They also ran into the thief, but it was a mild confrontation.
I guess the thief was lucky he did not steal our boat.
