Luna’s island tales: Heroic Rescues, volcanic bubble diving and dry bilges

Stromboli

Stromboli is not just any island; it’s a place where the raw power of nature is constantly on display. This tiny island, with its active volcano, is known as “the lighthouse of the Mediterranean.” The frequent eruptions and stunning landscapes draw adventurers and tourists from around the world. However, life here isn’t without its challenges, as I recently discovered.

During our stay, we encountered a German group in distress. Their anchor had gotten stuck, and they were unable to free it. Enter Captain Kay, our fearless leader, who immediately sprang into action to help. Eager to capture this heroic deed on camera, I found myself in an unexpected predicament. I had to lower the camera into the water, which, to my horror, was contaminated with sewage. Someone nearby had opened their sewage tanks, and the entire waterline was smeared with waste. Despite my best efforts, the footage of the rescue isn’t perfect, and I ended up with brown arms as a result.

Panarea

On a hike in Panarea, we visited 3 donkeys on a mountain.

Dry bilge

But this wasn’t the only challenge we faced. For anyone who spends time on a boat, a dry bilge is essential. It’s not just about comfort; a dry bilge prevents damage to the boat and reduces unpleasant odors. Our diligent maintenance efforts included fixing several key issues: the cooling water hose from the engine, the water connection for the outdoor shower, the condensation drain from the refrigerator, the pressure relief valve of the boiler, the air conditioning pump of both cabins, the supply line of the watermaker, and a through-hull fitting that was later removed. Keeping the bilge dry ensures the longevity of the boat and a pleasant living environment on board.

Living in Stromboli

Living on Stromboli, you quickly learn to adapt. The island’s population has dwindled over the years due to the frequent eruptions and dangerous situations. Currently, about 650 people live here, a sharp decline from the population of 1930, which was double that. Many residents have relocated, seeking safer living conditions. Nearly all who remain live on the northeastern side of the island, deemed the safest area.

One of the unique aspects of Stromboli is its economy. Fresh vegetables and fruits are very expensive due to the island’s remote location and the difficulty of transporting goods. However, some small comforts are still accessible—thankfully, the ice cream is affordable!

Cefalu

In addition to our time on Stromboli and Lipari, we also visited the charming town of Cefalù on the northern coast of Sicily. Cefalù is known for its stunning beaches, medieval architecture, and the magnificent Cefalù Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Exploring this historic town provided a perfect blend of relaxation and cultural enrichment, making it a highlight of our journey.

Homeschooling

Homeschooling on the boat has been an adventure in itself. With such a dynamic environment, lessons are never boring. The kids learn about geography and geology firsthand, witnessing the island’s volcanic activity. They also get practical lessons in navigation, marine biology, and even basic boat maintenance. It’s a unique educational experience that combines traditional learning with real-world applications.

Bubbling in Lipari

Our adventures aren’t limited to Stromboli. We took a trip to Lipari Island, where we experienced something truly magical. Diving in front of Lipari, we found an area where bubbles constantly rise from the sea floor. This underwater spectacle is due to volcanic gases escaping through cracks in the seabed. Swimming among the bubbles was like being in a natural jacuzzi, an unforgettable experience that highlighted the volcanic activity beneath the sea.

Our journey on Stromboli has been an eye-opener, filled with both excitement and challenges. From heroic rescues to everyday maintenance, and from homeschooling to underwater adventures, life on this volcanic island is never dull. The stunning beauty of the island, coupled with the resilience of its inhabitants, makes Stromboli a truly special place. Whether you’re visiting for its natural wonders or to experience its unique way of life, Stromboli offers an unforgettable adventure.
