Sadly, snow for the last time!

Home » Blog » Sadly, snow for the last time!

We actually recorded this vlog a day before our departure, and let me tell you, it’s an exciting time for us! We’re jumping into an extraordinary journey, leaving behind everything familiar, to live aboard a boat. Can you imagine stepping so far out of your comfort zone and leaving everything behind?

It’s been exactly two years since we bought the boat. Fast forward two years, and Marina Kastela in Croatia has become our second home. Yet, in just two weeks, we’ll say goodbye to this marina, leaving us without a home base.

Interestingly, the roles have reversed within our family dynamics. While Daniella was initially anxious and had to adapt to the idea, Kay has now found himself struggling with the reality of this inevitable adventure. In two weeks, we won’t have a home base to turn to in case of emergencies or storms. As the captain, this weighs heavily on Kay’s shoulders.

The kids are very excited to live onboard. They are looking forward to the homescholing. Let’s hope mama will also keep the faith.

This vlog serves as a brief introduction to our family and offers a glimpse into our recent family holiday in the snow. Over the Christmas break, we ventured to Austria, specifically the Dutch enclave of Gerlos. Nestled in a fantastic hotel near the slopes, we were treated to a luxurious stay.

While the kids enjoyed ski lessons, Kay arranged a private tutor for of us to improve our skills on the slopes. Despite the initial challenges and sore muscles, conquering the slopes filled me with newfound confidence and now I can come down the slopes gracefully.  As we savored the breathtaking views with a refreshing ‘Weizen’ in hand, the kids diligently attended their classes. It was heart-wrenching to witness their tears as we parted ways each morning, but we knew it was essential for their growth and independence. They have to explore new paths on their own. As soft as I am, I saw it coming miles away: it was almost just as hard for us as it was for them.

I insisted to put the kids together in the class, so they could lean on each other. The teacher advised us to put Lewis in the higher group and I saw Kay nod encouraging. But I put my foot down, they had to stay together.

Then it hit me: if Beau was making trouble, he would drag Lewis with him and would prevent her from growing. So reluctantly I admitted to Kay that it wouldn’t be the best thing to keep Lewis back.

She went on her own and in the end it was the best decision. As Beau sulked on the baby slope, Lewis glowed going down on the other side.

She learned very quickly and in 3 days, we saw her going down the big slopes. After four days she won the race! We were very very proud!

Beau always has some trouble with authority ( we still don’t know where he gets it from…) and he did not want to make a pizza with his skis. Going straight down was more fun and when the teacher said he was not allowed to, he gave up and laid face down in the snow. Then it was time for daycare.

After a few days we decided to teach him ourselves and that was the right call. We know his instruction manual, as we are the ones who installed him, and after a few days he came down the slope, laughing and racing.

For the kids it was s a bittersweet farewell to snow, as sandy shores await in the years to come.

Stay tuned for our next vlog, where we’ll share the challenges we faced in the weeks leading up to our departure. We’d love to hear your thoughts on our debut vlog, so drop us a comment below, and don’t forget to hit that subscribe button for more adventures!
